Low Levels Of Inflammation

Improved Essays
You have probably heard of diseases and conditions that involve acute inflammation. Arthritis, asthma and gout are all examples of inflammatory diseases. However, there is another type of inflammation that is not so obvious because it silently attacks the internal organs over a long period of time causing disease and degeneration. Silent inflammation is called "silent" because you can't feel it. On a day-to-day basis it doesn't rise up to the level of pain that you can feel.

Because the level of inflammation is under the radar you don't even notice its effects. You may be suffering from it for years and not even realize it. In the meantime, it's getting worse and worse and if you don't do something about it, it can evolve into a serious disease.

Inflammation is an absolutely essential part of the bodys immune system. Whenever bacteria, viruses or a minor bruise cause damage to the body inflammation is the bodys reaction to dealing with the problem. If we didn't have this defense mechanism we wouldn't survive for very long. However, if you can't feel inflammation and the inflammation lingers on for years the end result is damage to internal organs such as the brain and cardiovascular system.

So, how do we end up with low levels of inflammation that doesn't go away? Almost all silent inflammation is the result of poor diet and nutrition. A normal diet creates compounds from fatty acids called prostaglandins. There are pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and there are anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. The bad prostaglandins are produced by foods such as red meat, sugar, coffee, alcohol and bread and pasta made from refined grains and white flour. The good prostaglandins can be found in nuts, seeds, fish, olive oil, green tea, vegetables and whole
