I. Introduction
A. The scientists are testing to determine the best anthropometric, or measurement of the body to determine low birth weight among newborns. The study is being performed in a developing country.
1. Pregnant women were monitored in their third and last trimester of pregnancy and were followed until they delivered their babies.
2. Newborn measurements were checked within 48 hours of birth using standard scales.
B. The scientist’s believed that birth weight is one of the most reliable indicators of health of the community. Low birth weight is considered to be an important factor when it comes to the healthy survival of infants, thus, the need to prevent low birth weight is of high importance. The optimum cut off values for measurements in new born determining a low birth weight status were as follows: For crown heel length, 32.52cm, for head circumference, 29.16cm for chest circumference, 8.44cm for mid arm circumference, 28.40cm for abdominal circumference, 11.63cm for thigh circumference, 8.56cm for calf circumference, 3.23mm for subscapular skinfold, 3.38mm for biceps skinfold, 3.90mm for triceps skinfold and 4.71 mm for thigh …show more content…
From the point view of predicting positive low birth cases, mid-arm circumference served to be the best surrogate, and chest circumference was the second to classify low birth weight babies.
5. The significant contributors of birth weight in newborns are the crown heel length, head circumference, mid arm circumference, subscapular skinfold, biceps skinfold and thigh skinfold thicknesses.

IV. Discussion
A. Low birth weight is more prevalent in Indian babies and is a contributor to the mortality rate of infants.
B. Surrogate measures for birth weight were concluded for infants and for the healthcare workers who help pregnant women and newborns identify the risk factors of low birth weight and take action to be managed.
C. Other developing countries have suggested different cut off values for anthropometric measurements to identify low birth weight in infants as a variety of ethnic groups vary in body structure.
D. The detection of low birth rate right after birth is vitally important to maintaining the health of that newborn. Thus, it is concluded that the cut off values of anthropometric measurements are that of the mid arm circumference ≤8.44 and chest circumference ≤29.16. It had better sensitivity for identifying infants that weighed < 2,500
