Love That Boy Analysis

Jack doesn’t want to write poetry. He thinks that it is something that girls do. He doesn’t understand the poem about the red wheelbarrow. Jack just thinks you have to make short lines. He writes a poem anyways, about a blue care, but says he doesn’t like it. He makes his teacher promise to not let anyone hear it or see it. Jake adds more to his blue car poem and agrees to get his teacher hang it up only if she leaves his name off. Jack is asked to write a poem about his pet, but he doesn’t have any pets. Jack writes about the how he got the dog he use have. Jack says its too sad but agrees to let his teacher hang it up as long as his name isn’t on it. Jack really like the poet Walter Dean Myers. I really believe it would be a great inspiration for students because it is about a student who is discouraged to write poetry in the first place. You can share the book with students and then read some of the poems that were mentioned in the book. You can take a poll on which poem students like best. You can also do a short lesson on plagiarism. In the book Jack mentions that he write a poem using a lot of Walter Dean Myers words. His teacher still hangs that poem up but adds that it was inspired by him. You can teach children how and when it is okay to use other peoples published words. Jack has trouble writing a poem about a pet because he no longer has a pet. You can give students the same assignment and if they have trouble remind them about what Jack did.
