Dave Pelzer always pursue love and acceptance. Since he had once experience love and acceptance from his family before his mother became mental ill , he was always looking for that feeling after his family dynamics changed. Pelzer timidly believed if he obeyed his mother’s wishes , maybe somehow she will grow to love the child she once did. In his family home , Pelzer wanted his family to recognize who he was . He wanted to belong. Pelzer writes
“ By this time , for all practical purpose. I was no longer a member of the family. I existed, but there was little or no recognition. Mother had even stopped using my name; referring to me only as The Boy. I was not allowed to eat meals with the family” (Pelezer , 1933, pg. …show more content…
Pelzer overcame some many atrocities in his mother’s home. For example, there was a burning incident. Dave’s mother had put on the stove and grabbed his arm to burn him. She wanted to show Dave what hell felt like since she believes Dave was the one becoming life unbearable (Pelzer, 1993, pg. 41). Another incident is when Dave was force to drink ammonia. As toxic as that was , Dave tried his hardest to stay alive and when she did not succeed in forcing him to drink a lot , she pounded his head on the floor ( Pelzer, 1993, pg. 75). Even at one of his foster homes, Dave had confrontation with his foster boy Larry Jr. They constantly argued and fought because of there differences. Dave states :
After my argument with Larry Jr. , I kept tp myself and tried to stay as far away from him as I could . But wherever , no one was around and I found myself running into him, for no reason I ‘d blurt out feelings of hatred at him. Sometimes he’d simply swear, while other times he’d chase me and tackle me to the floor “ ( Pelzer, 1997, pg. 119). Most importantly , Dave was able to discover himself through both books. As previously mention , he participated in various activates to figure where he belong . He was placed in several different home while in the foster care system. With each home , he discovered a little about himself
