Piggy was undeniably the social outcast on the island. He was extremely overweight compared to the other boys who were all relatively fit and trim. Something else that set him apart was that he also had asthma, unlike any of them. He couldn't go hunting or on any trips that required any extreme physical exertion. From the moment they meet, Piggy told Ralph “’I'll expect we’ll want to know all their names,’ said the fat boy, ‘and make a list.We ought to have a meeting’”(11). Piggy always seems to know how to organize everyone. But do to his lack of athleticism, he is constantly dismissed. “’I have the conch! Just you listen! The first thing we ought to have made was shelters… . Ralph says ‘fire’ and you goes howling and screaming up this mountain here. Like a pack of kids.’”(45). Piggy has all the right ideas, just nobody to listen to them. They all believe Ralph is the golden boy and is more capable of leader ship due to his exuding confidence at the start of the book, but sadly, deteriorates over the course of the book.
