There is Naturalistic observation where researchers go out into the “field” so to speak. They go out to the participant’s Natural habitat, whether it be a preschool classroom or an African village, and record the behavior of interest. The issue with this is not everyone will have the same opportunity to display the same behavior in everyday life. It’s the luck of the draw!
In Structured Observation, the researcher sets up a particular situation in a lab that evokes the behavior of interest so everyone participating can have an equal opportunity to display their Reponses to the issue at hand. Each person is asked the same question in the same way. This style is more efficient, the answers are briefer, and the researcher gets a written response from a group of people at the same time. The issue with this style is the researcher does not get an in depth answer like they would have with the Clinical Interview and there is still a chance of inaccurate reporting.
A Clinical or Case Study Method brings together a wide range of information about one person. This includes test, interviews and observations about a person to get a complete picture of the person psychological functioning and experiences that led up to it. The issue is that the information is unsystematically and subjectively collected. Researchers may be bias with their observations and interpretations and they cannot assume their conclusions apply to anyone
