Long Way Gone Recovery

Recovery and rehabilitation are extremely difficult tasks. It is more of a challenge when the patient is isolated. Mariatu Kamara and Ishmael Beah were victims of this tragedy, although both now live in North America and have written books about their experiences. Mariatu was attacked when she returned to her village for supplies. As a punishment for trying to run away, her hands were brutally removed by the rebel forces. She had to make her way back to a city all by herself to receive medical attention (Kamara). Ishmael’s entire family was killed and he was forced to roam the country trying to survive only to end up a child soldier. He was forced to do many things that were inhumane and unacceptable (Beah). Recovery in a group of similar people has been proven to be more successful and supportive. Mariatu eventually recovered but process could have had more support from those around her. Ishmael’s recovery can be described as group therapy that can help, “patients gain a better understanding of themselves, and perhaps a stronger set of interpersonal and coping skills through the group therapy process” (Ford-Martin 13). Ultimately Ishmael’s recovery is successful because he was with a group of individuals in equivalent situations. He was not isolated in the
