For example, after both Uncle and Marial passed away, “Salva knew both of them would have wanted him to survive, to finish the trip, and reach the Itang refugee camp safely.” Without the memories to keep him going, he wouldn’t have a need to survive. Another example is when “those smallest boys reminded Salva of his brother Kuol.” Since the young boys reminded Salva of Kuol he was able to feel confident with the boys and lead them through the rest of the journey.

Salva’s perseverance to get to the camp safely, kept him on his feet during the journey. Uncle helped Salva persevere by saying “you only need to walk as far as those bushed. Can you do that Salva Mawien Dut Ariik”. By using Salva’s name and giving him steps to “climb”, Salva was able to persevere. Another example is when Salva persevered through all the challenges of the desert even though “there was not a thing to indicate that the group was making any progress at all.” Even though Salva felt like he would never leave the desert, he persevered until he got through

This quote shows how salva was scared to be in the barn by himself and he was brave and he found someone to help him find a group. Salva was also confident in himself because he stayed calm and he always stayed positive that he was going to find his family. During salva’s journey he was always confident in himself that he could make it to ethiopia and walk there and he did. I can support this because in the book it states “Salva would think of his family and his village, he was somehow able to keep his wounded feet moving forward, one painful step at a time.” this quote shows that salva was confident in himself that he could think of his family…
