The CDC worked with Kaiser Permanente and had 17,000 participants who were living in Southern California complete physical exams and asked to fill out confidentiality surveys. The ACE survey included questions regarding the first eighteen years of life. Many questions involved experiences such as: maltreatment, family dysfunction, health, and current behaviors. According to the CDC website in the section of Violence Prevention, The ACE study was one of the biggest, “investigations of childhood abuse and neglect and later-life health and well-being” (Violence Prevention,2016). ACEs are stressful or traumatic experiences ranging from commission and omission acts of abuse. According to the Substance abuse and mental health services website in the section Adverse childhood experiences, Consequences of the abuse can be” strongly related to development and prevalence of a wide range of health problems, including substance abuse, throughout the lifespan” (Adverse Childhood Experiences,2017).
