Most of part 1 in the book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, took place in Las Vegas, California during 1971. Las Vegas is a very large and populated city where many events take place such as “The mint 400”, which is why Raoul Duke traveled all the way from Los Angeles to journalize the race. In order to get to Las Vegas Duke and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, must journey through one of the hottest states in a red convertible. Although this is just one of the few tasks he wants to accomplish. He also wants to find the “The American Dream”. To journalize the event, Duke and his attorney are given a room in a luxurious Mint Hotel to rest during the night. Gonzo, are both heavy drinkers and are drug addicts. Due to this they both have very erratic and explosive behaviour when they are still under the influence of drugs. During Raoul Duke’s early adult life, he lived down the street from a doctor who was studying the effects of LSD. He had quite an explosive and violent nature and wanted to get rid of it so he decided to go to the doctor and ask him for advice on how LSD could potentially solve his problems. This is how he got into heavy drug use. Other signs of him showing animosity towards violence includes, his inability to tolerate watching the news when a violent event occurs and him breaking down when the radio station plays a song about war veterans. He also wasn’t from a wealthy family as he had to hunt for his own food on a daily basis. On the other hand, Dr.Gonzo is a Samoan who is the attorney and good friend of Raoul Duke. Much like his Raoul, he gets very aggressive when he is still under the influence of drugs. Nothing more is none about this character other than he is a bit overweight and wears
