Abstract
Luminol was synthesized and the light intensity of its luminescence was tested. The yield of the synthesis was 55%. Measurements of the intensity of luminescence were done under standard and optimal conditions resulting in peak intensities of ±0.02 lux (standard) and ±0.03 lux (optimal). It has been shown that an increase in pH results in an increase in intensity with a maximum of pH=11.33.
Introduction
In this project, the chemiluminescence of luminol was studied. The project consists of two parts. First, luminol was synthesized in a two-step process.

Luminol is synthesized in a two-step reaction. The first step is the condensation of 3-nitrophthalic acid. The product of this step subsequently reacts with sodium dithionite to reduce the –NO2 to –NH2. The reaction mechanisms for these steps are depicted below. …show more content…
This creates a molecule with several resonance forms, one of which can react with the catalyst, K3Fe(CN)6. The catalyst removes one electron from two of the dianions, which creates two radicals. These radicals react to form one dianion and one anion. Hydrogen peroxide reacts with carbonate ions to form a –O2H ion, which attached to the carboxylic carbon of the singly charged anion. The peroxide group is now deprotonated by carbonate again and a bond is formed between the negative oxygen atom in the peroxide group and the other carbon atom. Finally a molecule of nitrogen is abstracted to form a molecule in the excited triplet state. Through inter system crossing (ISC), the molecule is converted to the excited singlet state, from where is can fluoresce to the ground state, releasing a photon of wavelength 425

Goals The goal of the lab was to investigate the properties and structure of an unidentified compound that was discovered in a local landfill. The group was called in to help determine the chemical and physical properties of the compound so we can let the people of the town know so it can be taken care of properly with or without further precautions to be taken. Another goal of this project was to devise the synthesis of the unknown compound. Experimental Design In order to determine the correct identity of our unknown compound, we first started with a couple preliminary tests, which include physical state and smell.…

The concentration of red 40 was determined to be 1.078 x 10-5 mol/L. To prepare a solution of these concentrations, 10 mL of Blue #1 and 12 mL of Red #40 were combined in a beaker, and the beaker was then filled to the 100 mL mark. To evaluate the accuracy of this synthesized color profile, Ocean Optics Spectrometer was used to evaluate the wavelength and absorbance values for this synthesized solution. After the solution was prepared, it was evaluated using the Ocean Optics Spectrometer. The peak absorbance versus concentration was then graphed according to Beer’s Law (M1V1=M2V2) to verify if the synthesized solution was indeed an accurate color match for the purple Gatorade…

Discussion of Results: This experiment consists of three different parts. The main goal of the experiment is to identify the unknown compound the lab group was given. Along with this, the group is to discover the compounds many physical or chemical properties. Lastly, the group is supposed to create and preform two syntheses of the compound and see how they compare and contrast in different areas like costs effectiveness, safety, and potential yield of the compound. Through all of these different goals, the underlying key goal is to learn more about this unknown compound through the group’s own research and experiments.…

As known, the chemical reaction of luminol can be classified as a process of chemiluminescence. The luminol chemical reaction can be compared to the chemical reaction of a glow stick. If a chemical reaction is at a cold/cooler temperature, it occurs at a slower rate. If a chemical reaction is at a hotter/warmer temperature, it occurs at a faster rate. If it is cooler/cooler it last longer, because it slow down.…

The acids tested included TSOH, SnCL4 , TiCl4 , BF3OEt2, AlCl3 , ZnCl2 and CF3COOH. The acids that provided the researchers with optimized condition was TiCl4 which allowed for a percent yield of 98% unlike AlCl3 which provided only 11% yield indicating possibly a longer reaction time especially during dione formation. The researchers also looked regiospecificity with the Lewis acids and they found that most acids except for TsOH were able to deliver a regiospecific manner. Observing their many attempts to produce the desired product and good yields gave a picture as to what was the recipe/requirement for this reaction to take place. All successful reactions had electron donating group on aromatic nucleophile, ideal reaction temperature was -40 degrees Celsius and meta substituted compounds provided higher yields.…

The Reaction of a food dye with bleach Introduction The overall purpose of the experiment was to determine the order in respect to the blue dye and the rate constant (K). With these found however, the overall rate law in the reaction between blue food coloring and the bleaching agent within commercial Clorox can be found. The orders in a rate law equation represent the relationship between the concentration of a given element or molecule and the overall rate, for example, when a reaction in respect to the concentration of an element is first order and the concentration is doubled so too would the rate of the reaction.…
