There were many symbols in The Hobbit. One was Gandalf and how he is like God. Gandalf was always there when the dwarves and Bilbo needed them. " Then Bilbo understood. It was the wizards voice that had kept the trolls bickering and quarrelling, until the light came and made an end of them." (Tolkien 40). An example of a motif in The hobbit would be the ring. As it is an important and reoccurring element in the book. With the help of the ring Bilbo is able to survive many obstacles he encountered within the story. One example would be when the Dwarves are in the Goblin caves and Bilbo has to escape from Golem and the other Goblins. "They could not find Bilbo with the ring on, slipping in and out of the shadows of the trees, running quick and quiet, and keeping out of the sun; soon they went bac grumbling and cursing to guard the door. Bilbo had escaped." This is one example of how important the ring is to the story. Without the ring Bilbo might not have escaped the goblins and then the story wouldn't be able to continue. As stated n the beginning of the book Gandalf and the others had to persuade him to go on the journey due to how good things would be for him if he goes on the adventure and is successful. "I will go so far as to send you on this adventure. Very amusing to me, very good for you- and profitable too, very likely if you ever get over it." (Tolkien 7). Gandalf had to persuade him to go on the adventure and even after hearing that it was profitable still declined on going on the journey. The dwarves had a hard time convincing Bilbo as well, but he soon joined the journey. Throughout the book he uses his brain to help everyone. From the spiders to Smaug to the battle at the end. Towards the end of the book Bilbo help be the last stand against the many enemies within the battle "On all this Bilbo looked with misery. He had taken his stand on Ravenhill among the Elves-partly because there was more chance for escape from that point, and partly (with the more Tookish part of his mind)because if he was going to be in a last desperate stand, he preferred on the whole to defend the Elvenking." (Tolkien 259). This shows the change throughout the book and supports the theme presented
