Sonny’s Blues
Do you think Sonny’s Blues story is very pathetic? According to the story, the narrator discovers from a newspaper that his younger brother Sonny’s has been arrested for selling and using drugs. The narrator stated that as he ready to teach his class he remembers his younger brother Sonny’s by explaining the hardship and struggles they went through with his brother when growing up in Harlem. Also, the narrator continuing saying at the end of his class he went home; however, he realized that one of Sonny’s old friends who is always high and dirty was waiting for him by the school. Because from the story the narrator stated suffering is constant presence in Sonny’s Blues. From the death of the narrator’s daughter to Sonny’s drug addiction to the cold blooded murder of the narrator’s uncle where suffering overcome the community. The narrator further stated suffering symbolized throughout the work by darkness in which encroaches upon the lives of the narrator’s family and community. Also, the narrator explains that Sonny’s heroin usage is an attempt to live with suffering that could otherwise paralyze him. In addition, the narrator stated imprisonment is a common theme in Sonny’s Blues. Sonny was imprisoned when he was jail for selling heroin. The narrator stated been in prison is a devastating experience for Sonny, who long for freedom. In addition, the narrator refers to Harlem multiple times as a trap which individuals must struggle to escape and he also said that even those who have leave the community “always left something of themselves behind” (p 49). The narrator discussed that when Sonny pleads with his brother to leave Harlem and go to the military and he notes that he looked “trapped, and in anguish” (p 51). There are several for Sonny’s Blues struggles and these are: art, suffering and imprisonment, racism and segregation, and anger and redemption. From the story, we learned that the narrator was happy with both his career and relationship with a teaching position, a wife and children. The interesting part of the story is weaved by a touch of musical. The story reminds us about the historicity and wealth of black music and artistry that even white Americans later would hail and emulate. We also learned that listen is a simple task thing, but still it is so difficult to follow.
