Lisa Anderson is the Assistant Attorney General of Nebraska within her career she is required to know her code of ethics as well as, a variety of human services codes of ethics. Her job requires her to look and decide whether action should be taken upon a case legally. In the majority of her cases she deals with professionals who may have broken their code of ethics or have overstepped their bounds within their scope of practice. In other words Lisa handles and or prosecute cases against liscensed health and human services professionals who have violated the health credential act. This often brings up unprofessional conduct, ethical dilemmas, and instances that violate a patients rights. Within her professional career Lisa operates according to the Nebraska Supreme court code of ethics. She keeps a copy of her ethical code in her office and says that she is able to pull a version of it up on her phone as well. When I asked Lisa if she ever consults any of her coworkers when making an ethical decision or an ethical issue within a case she said, “ Sometimes I speak with my coworkers about a case but, within the office we have a team of ethics experts and I usually consult them if I have any questions.” Later on within the interview I had with Lisa I asked her what process she uses when she is unsure of something within a code of ethics whether it be her own or that of the case that she is prosecuting. Lisa stated that she usually looked up the code of ethics and read the professional responsibility rules then if she is unable to find the answer she consults with co-workers consisting of three attorneys and then lastly if she is still unable to come to a conscise answer she consults ethics experts and then she is able to contact the attorney discipline office if need be. Lisa practices many of the same founding principals including: veracity, beneficence, justice, and fidelity. She practices justice on many levels because when you think of the law justice is the word that usually comes to mind. When I asked Lisa about how she practices veracity and fidelity she said, lawyers are to comply with the statutes in the state of Nebraska and uphold them which usually means using discretion she operates under the confidentiality of the facts and records. “I need to make sure that everything I’m doing is correct,” said Lisa in regard to her career, which speaks to non-maleficence, beneficence, justice, and veracity all in one. I am sure that throughout our lives we face ethical decisions that are very complicated for us to deal with especially when the issues and the rules do not correspond to your own ethical values. This can be where the lines get blurred and the black and white is now more of a gray area. Within the code of ethics for the NAADAC SAutonomy is one of the founding principles found on the first page. It claraifys that you are to let your client be independent and self-sufficient. This means that you cannot tell you client what to do and give them advice you must only guide them through issues and attain the overall goal. Autonomy like non-maleficence is also not clarified within the Supreme Court code of ethics. Furthermore within the NAADAC code of ethics self improvement points are a whole other category I-3, III-31, and III-18 all assimilate to being self aware and giving the client that autonomy because within that profession it is
