In the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping case, the court system is seen when Hauptmann has his first appearance in the courts and is indicted by the Supreme Court on charges of extortion of $50,000 from Charles Lindbergh. In a preliminary hearing at the Hunterdon County Courthouse in New Jersey, grand jurors unanimously voted to indict Hauptman for murder in 1934 (Linder, 2017). This evidence was circumstantial and included handwriting samples which matched the handwriting on the ransom notes, tool marks on the ladder matching tools owned by the accused, and the same type of wood from the ladder found in his attic. On January 3, 1935 the trial of Hauptmann began in Flemington, New Jersey and lasted roughly five weeks. The judge oversaw the trial and due to a guilty verdict returned on February 13, 1935, the accused was declared guilty of murder in the first degree. Once a verdict had been handed down by the jury, the sentencing phase of the case begins. After the legal evidence of the factual issues involved in this case, the adjudication was the death penalty. Adjudication is defined as “the legal process of resolving a dispute” (REFERENCE). Furthermore, aspects of the court system which can be applied are appeals.
