Miriam is a young Afghan girl who grows up in poverty and has a ton of social stigma surrounding her since the day of her birth. On the other hand Tita comes from a pretty well established family that owns their own ranch and never seem to go hungry or unsatisfied when it comes to the essentials of everyday living. During the time period A Thousand Splendid Suns, Miriam experienced the tragic death of her mother and the protested marriage to Rasheed at the age of fifteen. The changes that surfaced because of these events changed Mariam as a character. In the first part of the book Mariam would obey her mother, Nana, by doing as she was told and survived each week by seeing her father, Jalil, who was a wealthy business man. Miriam came to the reality that Nana had told her that men were liars and the untrustworthy gender once Mariam was promised by Jalil to be taken to his theater for the special occasion of her birthday. Miriam waited for Jalil to show up at her hut all day and then decided to venture to Jalil’s house, where she slept outside while Jalil was inside his house. Family is the one thing that Tita and Miriam could go and embrace when life would knock them down.Tita altercated with her sister, Rosaura, whom was the one who Mama Elena suggested who Pedro should get married to. The fight over Pedro’s love and attention was always won by Tita. This lead to the seeking health and death of Rosaura, which may have been for the best due to the torture Tita had to spectate while Rosaura and Pedro were together. Throughout all the chaos of Tita trying to fight for Pedro’s love, she helped Rosaura lose weight to please Pedro due to a lack of physical and social neglect she had received. Tita always stood by her family because it was all she had to go to when life got to hard to deal with, seeing her family happy and satisfied made her get through day and gave her someone to feed her delicious meals that brought such delight. In Miriam’s situation her family was Aziza, Zalmai and Laila. This makeshift family she thought she never would have become the reason she did radical actions to do the best by them.
