Nirvana is a great example of the use of substances to “heal” oneself. In their song “Dumb” they sing “My heart is broke, but I have some glue. Help me inhale and mend it with you...” So many people feel this way and turn to drugs, alcohol, self-harm, etc., to deal with their difficulties, which in the end makes it worse. The verse continues with “We’ll float around, and hang out on clouds. Things get blown out of proportion and turned into bigger deals than they are. The song “I Miss You” by Blink-182 shows that thoughts can keep you up at night and trouble you: “Where are you? And I’m so sorry. I cannot sleep. I cannot dream tonight. I need somebody and always this sick strange darkness comes creeping on, so haunting every time...” This loneliness and creeping darkness or depression, make even the most basic human functions almost impossible. The song “Car Radio” by Twenty One Pilots shows the importance of having a barrier between your thoughts and your mind such as music: “Sometimes quiet is violent… There’s no hiding for me. I’m forced to deal with what I feel. There is no distraction to mask what is real… I ponder of something terrifying ‘cause this time there’s no sound to hide behind.
