Jackson explained some of the small stressors being things like sick calls of staff, sending inmates out to the local hospitals, and the security of the staff and inmates while being at work. The large stressors are things like assaults in the facility between not only inmates but also inmates and staff, things like emergency medical situations, and things like inmates making disturbances. Jackson described a situation that happened about a year ago, where an inmate placed herself inside of the razor wire along the fence to make a statement. This caused the institution to go on lockdown, and an emergency to be declared. He talked about how the whole institution was affected and even part of the department that is not located at that actual facility came to the institution to take control of the disturbance. Jackson stated, “This was a huge stressor and caused many staff members to work sixteen plus hour shifts that day, but in the end everyone came together as a team, no one was hurt, and all the staff went home to their families.” Jackson explained how this shows that the training that the department receives initially upon hire and annually keeps people within the department safe. Life in corrections is a very dangerous career, it can get violent and at times scary especially with the types of criminals coming in now, but with the tools that we are given and always being alert and ready for anything it can help prevent unnecessary things from happening. The criminal profiles that are coming in are young and disrespectful, they often times have also been raised in bad situations, and this can cause things to also be dangerous. “Yes, there are murders and sexual offenders that come in every day, but it’s the young ones that come in with drug problems, and assault people for looking at them the wrong way that you have to worry about. These are the types of inmates that come in that

In order to prepare for this experience I made sure to complete it on a day where I had no school or work obligations. I also decided to do it the day before Thanksgiving so the next day would make up for the lack of human contact, food, and restricted activities. As for the mental and emotional aspect, I was not too worried and I did not feel as though I needed some sort of preparation. I tend to spend a lot of time alone in a small room. My main concern was definitely not being able to use electronics and the restricted bathroom and water breaks.…

This incident made Mark feel as if he had no control or say in the situation unless he wanted to face the punishments of his superiors. This feeling can lead to ex-offenders having difficulties reintegrating into society such as having “difficulty in accessing the self-motivation required for free world life” or the feeling that they do not have any control of their life, especially for someone like them who is looked upon by society (Chesla & Marlow, 2009). As an inmate resides within correctional facility walls, aggression is prone to develop in order to adapt to prison life. During National Correctional Workers’ Week, the Bureau of Prisons pays tribute to our fallen Correctional Officers, who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Every day, we put the safety of the American people above our own, as we all walk through the doors, gates, grills and sally ports. We chose to jeopardize our lives and the lives of our families to complete the Bureau of Prisons mission, to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens. We knowingly put ourselves in harm’s way to protect and keep our communities more safe and secure.…

Parole / Corrections Officers The American Correctional Association stated that Parole Officers or Corrections officers have one of the highest rates of nonfatal, work-related injuries compared to all of U.S. workers. Almost forty percent of injuries are a result of physical assaults, confrontations with inmates and other acts of violence. Working with recently arrested individuals, as well as people awaiting trial or already serving prison sentences, is just one part of the job for corrections officers. In my opinion, sometimes our correctional system seems to cause more problems than assistance to the society. The system is very expensive, overcrowded, and inefficient in certain aspects. One of the problems The United States Correctional System faces today is prison violence. Violence is not random or mindless but steamed from identifiable conflicts between inmates that had escalated due to the lack of positive coping skills and could be avoided with more counseling accessibility.…
