The environmental setting in which a person lives and interacts greatly influences the way in which conversations will go, as well as how indicate the gestures people will be willing to display within a particular environment, this is also inclusive about how nonverbal behaviour can regulate the flow of a verbal interaction.
The physical environment displayed in the series Lie to Me portrays a harsh environment, the interrogation setting can affect a person’s verbal speech however nonverbal communication cannot usually be hidden and due to this, nonverbal messages are highly credible, perhaps because they often convey feelings and emotions (Steinberg, Angelopulo, 2015). There are a number of categories pertaining to nonverbal communication, namely emblems, illustrators, affect displays and others. These categories of nonverbal communication indicate both emotion of the communicators as well as their reactions towards the physical setting and the person they are communicating with.
Nonverbal communication can also be picked up without having to look at the person, this can be picked up in the person’s speech. The meaning of a message is carried out by the speaker’s tone of voice (Steinberg, Angelopulo, 2015). Nonverbal communication cannot be hidden, speech may contradict the verbal communication and thus it can be picked up by the other person which then influences the direction in which the conversation will take.
