We start in the time period of about 1803, this is all how the notorious adventure begins. Thomas Jefferson president at the time had an interest in the Louisiana territory owned by the French so with the help of the U.S. Senate he purchases it. Which is known today as the Louisiana Purchase. After Jefferson discussed exploring the New Land beyond the “great rock mountains” he appointed his personal secretary Meriwether Lewis to voyage to the ocean. Lewis asked for help on this trip by a man named William Clark. He was an intelligent draftsman and frontiersman, Lewis had much respect for him and he gave him the role of a com-commanding captain on there expedition. The Start of the Voyage Lewis actually started his Journey from Pittsburgh then set out on the Ohio River, At Clarksville present day Indiana, he met up with Clark. Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1803 at Camp Dubois on the east bank of the Mississippi River, upstream from St. Louis. On May 14, 1804, the Lewis & Clark Expedition began its trip up the Missouri River. As they are traveling up they start to write in their journals, and also draw maps of where they have traveled because they have to show where they went to show the measurements of the land and also a key on how to get back. They also have wrote a lot about the wildlife environment in there Journals. American people haven’t explored the West yet so it was very foreign to them so anything that was different was to be document so Jefferson could make note and see the discoveries.
