(French et al. 2007). The illness perception element of Leventhal’s common sense model (Leventhal et al. 1980) has been a major focus on many studies, importantly focussing on how the perception of an illness can alter physical and psychological outcomes. From this, large amount of research has gone into producing models which can effectively alter a person’s thought process and behaviour. Advances in research from the newly emerging …show more content…
In spite of of such concern, ACT model has shown to be applied to measures such as pain related behaviour, especially those suffering from Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP) (McCracken, 1998). Two questionnaires have been produced in order to assess these process in ACT, named Committed Action Questionnaire (CAQ-8) and Committed Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ-8) each including eight distinctive questions (McCracken et al. 2015, Fish et al. …show more content…
CPAQ-8 has also been used specifically on individuals suffering from CLBP and results indicated the level of acceptance in CLBP individuals plays a crucial role in pain management (Mason et al. 2008). Nevertheless, CAQ-8 studies too indicated the internal consistency of the questionnaire as well as having an important relationship with it being correlated to the committed action aspect of psychological flexibility (McCracken, 2013)
Both CPAQ-8 and CAQ-8 studies have provided considerable amount of evidence that the score obtained from the measure are reliable and valid (McCracken, 2013). Construct validity of CPAQ-8 also indicated the robustness of its psychometric properties when tested amongst CLBP respondents (Mason et al 2008) as well as CAQ-8 being adequately reliable when compared to its longer version –CAQ (McCracken et al. 2014). Consequently, the measures from both the questionnaires are able to predict patient health and functioning effectively, particularly for its role in CLBP
