A histologist is one who studies the structure of tissues and recognizes any abnormalities. If the cells do in fact appear to be abnormal, the patient can then be sent to an oncologist who will investigate the cells further. An oncologist is one who treats cancer and manages whether or not action needs to be taken to expunge the cancer cells all together. The oncologist must then determine if either radiation or surgery will be the best solution to eradicate the cancer. A biopsy can also be taken to examine the tissue and the extent of the disease.
