This correspondence is being provided as a follow-up to the telephone conversation that I had with Mr. Scottie Brown on Wednesday, February 22nd in reference to your letter as parents requesting a written summary regarding the situation involving your son, Isaiah Brown and another student in his class at dismissal on Valentine's Day. Per my discussion with Mr. Brown, I shared the following:
• The situation observed by a Meramec parent, handled by a Meramec teacher, Mrs. Karen Finder, was previously investigated and addressed.
• While the parent observed only your son's interaction with one other student, there was another student also involved in what transpired.
• This other student has teased and taunted the student you identified as bullying your son during class, continuing to tease and taunt as they were leaving the building. Unfortunately, your son did observe this and did join in on the teasing and taunting which resulted in this student asking both boys to stop several times. • When this student became frustrated, he raised his leg and used his knee to hit your sons valentine's bag, causing it to drop to the ground. He yelled at your son and the other boy again, to stop. • Your son became upset, and was comforted and taken care of by Karen Finder, our math specialist, who assumes dismissal duty near the door in which your son exits. • Karen communicated the situation to your sons classroom teacher, as well as the parent who shared the situation with you, who also shared the situation with your sons teacher, Mrs. Monica Dinsmore. • Per the conferring of our staff members, the situation was addressed. As previously noted in my sharing the above events with Mr. Brown during our telephone call, upon investigating this incident further with Mrs. Dinsmore, Mrs. Finder and the students involved, while unfortunate, this incident is not an incident that we, the educational team here at Meramec, would classify as bullying. Also, given the rights of all children and families to privacy, the delicate nature of what transpired up to the events witnessed by a parent, regarding consequences for students cannot and will not be shared with anyone other than their parents. With regard to your awareness of three federal laws (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that protect the rights of a child with a disability against bullying behavior that is based on the child's disabilities and that interferes with or denies the child the opportunity to participate in or benefit from an educational program, please note that first and foremost, we take the safety of all students seriously, and we would not, nor have we violated any laws, and your son Isaiah has not been denied the opportunity to participate in any level of programming here at school. …show more content…
As a consistent member of all of Isaiah's IEP meetings and planning, even an advocate on his behalf, I am fully aware of all the components that make up his IEP. Presently, he has identified goals in place to improve overall communication and socialization skills that hopefully will assist him in problem-solving through an unfortunate incident such as this
