Leon Trotsky was an activist of Russia. He helped ignite the Russian Revolution. Trotsky was also mentioned in a novel by George Orwell. This novel was known as Animal Farm. The novel was about a farm of animals who dreamed of living on the farm without being controlled by humans. They plan to start a rebellion against the farm owner Mr. Jones. The leader of the rebellion is the pig Old Major. He is a symbol for Karl Marx. When he dies he expects his other pigs, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer to continue his plan. The animals eventually overthrow Mr. Jones, who was a representation of Czar Nicholas II. Snowball is meant to represent Leon Trotsky and Napoleon is meant to be Joseph Stalin. Jones was asleep. " First came the three dogs, Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher, and then the pigs, who settled down in the straw immediately in front of the platform". (Page 4). When Old Major died the pigs were naturally left in charge. The pigs were considered to be the smartest animals. " The work of teaching and organising the others fell naturally upon the pigs,who were generally recognized as being the cleverest of the animals". (Page 15) The other animals didn't contest to this change in power. The pigs were meant to keep the rebellion going on. Eventually, the animals ran Mr. Jones and his farm hands off of the farm. The animals were peaceful for a couple of years, then the pigs became more demanding. Snowball and Napoleon disagreed on many things just as Trotsky and Stalin did. The Farm was constantly changing, soon Napoleon had the dogs chase Snowball was off the Farm. He was never seen again, just as Trotsky was banished from the Soviet Union. Finally, many of the animals forgot about Snowball. Towards the end of the novel, most of the animals feared Napoleon. This is similar to how many people feared Stalin after he gained
