She searched the house, but no one was home. Leah heard someone. She called out, “Mom, Dad!” No one replied. She ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and hid in her best hiding spot behind the couch. “Hi, Leah Vanderbelt,” he said, welcoming her.
“How do you know my name?” Leah cried.
“That’s not important,” Jack replied. “I’ve heard Carl and Simon talking, and I know where your parents are; they’re next door.”
“First of all, how do I know I can trust you? And who’s Simon?” Leah asked.
“You don’t really have a choice but to trust me. Simon is the one in charge of all the killings. That’s what they do here. Simon orders Carl to kidnap people and then Simon kills them,” Jack explained.
“How’d you get here anyway?” Leah asked
“I trust too much. Simon asked me to help him with something in his car, and next thing I knew, I was stuck in here,” Jack answered.
Bang! They heard a gunshot, followed by a low scream. Leah’s parents were shoved in the same room as her. Leah’s father’s shoulder was bleeding. “Dad, Mom!” Leah screeched.
