Decent Essays
Have you ever wondered what law enforcements could do to improve relationships with minorities? Well in this essay I will give you some helpful suggestions. Law enforcements should never use excessive force to try and take down someone. They should try to shoot their arm instead of shoot to kill. They should treat them the same as if they were white. They should create a more diverse law enforcement. One suggestion I have is don’t shoot to kill. Shoot them in the arm or in the leg instead of a kill shot. People get so worked up when somebody in there group gets shot and killed. So to prevent that from happening don’t kill them just injure them. Nobody deserves to die, so don’t kill them. You may think, well if we don’t kill them they are

One of the greater issues in America today is the controversy with nonwhite Americans being treated unequally within the justice system, mainly by the police. Most people try to ignore the fact, but others know and agree that the mistreatment of nonwhites is wrong. This will not be an easy issue to resolve, but the more aware society becomes of the issue, the more the people of the country can do to put it to an end. Michelle Alexander’s book, The New Jim Crow, discussed this overall issue. Her main argument is the War on Drugs has caused many problems for those who are nonwhite, especially with police officers and the justice system.…

Law enforcement strategies and tactics are an example of how black minorities are being treated differently in this country then the majority. The 1996 Rodney King Riots in L.A. was one of first televised police related incidents that showed the country the level of police relations and african americans relations, and has since become of major concern and incidents involving white police officers and african americans have become subject public scrutiny. Recent cases such as Trayvon Martin (teenager shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer), Freddie Gray (died of a spinal cord injury while in custody), and Michael Brown (shot by a police officer after being accused of robbing a convenience store) have raised our consciousness regarding racial profiling. Black men face greater dangers when dealing with law enforcement and/or the public at large. Some good has come of these high-profile cases, with police reforms taking place across the country. New training techniques and programs like community policing are being utilized to help reduce violent encounters and help protect both officers and citizens. We can support and honor the service of the police community while, at the same time, expecting…

As part of our class readings for this year, our last assigned reading tackles the very controversial topic of race in this country. As we have learned about class in our discussions, we have also learned about how race can serve as a precursor to division in our country. One of these examples of this division in race occurs with the ongoing discussion of police brutality in our local communities. From Ferguson to Baltimore, this has been a fervent discussion for many years. One of the books that discusses this policing in local communities is ”Punished:…

This article talks about how a guy named Ramirez never saw police as a threat, he saw them with respect because they wore a uniform and they took care of us. Policing in Canada has progressed since the Code of Hammurabi in 1200 BC. The first police force was founded, and organized by Sir Robert Peel, where he came up with nine principles that police officers should follow (Griffiths, 2015). One of these principles were that “police [should] maintain public favour by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service, not by catering to public opinion” (Griffiths, 2015, p. 29). As a result, police officers should not be affected by the opinions of the power groups or the government. However, this is not the case.…

The question comes up over and over again on how the criminal justice system can improve the ways they run the organization. From lending down harsh penalties for people that have non-violent offenses instead of helping them through rehabilitation so they can become a part of society again. Police officers could be more involved in the community, helping look over those that have juvenile records. The officers can be around and that is the best thing they can do. When they are present it makes it harder to get away with criminal acts.…

Introduction The racial and ethnic problems that plague the criminal justice system have been apparent in recent news and social media coverage. These concerns, which affect a large portion of African Americans and Hispanics, have become one of the leading causes for the incarceration rate for both races. At a combined rate, African Americans and Hispanics make up 58% of all prisoners within the United States, but combined they only make up ¼ of the United States population (NAACP, n.d.). Negative bias within the criminal justice system is apparent in policing and within the legal judicial system especially in regards to the sentencing of African Americans and Hispanics.…

One of the most common techniques used by law enforcement to narrow down the criminal suspect pool is racial profiling. Racial minorities are being targeted by the key factors of race or ethnicity. I strongly disagree with this idea, for a person should only be held accountable if they are proven guilty. For my advocacy paper, I will address minorities; since I am one myself I will be able to relate to my audience more while informing them of the reasons this happens. This proposal includes my research methods.…

The public’s perception of how law enforcement officers conduct themselves while carrying out their sworn oath to serve and protect has always been at the center point of scrutiny. In recent years, profiling has been a controversial tactic used to aid in capturing criminals. Since the attacks of 9/11, minorities have consistently filed reports against law enforcement personnel the reports stating that they were disproportionately singled out by officers. In most cases, racial profiling is based on the premise that most crimes are committed by minorities. This creates a vacuum in which minorities are stopped, pulled over and or searched by law enforcement personnel.…

Although Whites do tend to agree and acknowledge that police treat minorities unfairly, they usually dismiss this as crime fighting activities and not of prejudice. Minorities also tends to view profiling as a result of racism, whereas whites would views racial profiling as a justifiable result of minorities mainly blacks being involved in crime related activities. “In this manner, more fundamental beliefs about race would seem to form the basis from which explanations for the causes of racial profiling are constructed.” 5 It is known that Blacks and Hispanics has a lower levels of trust in the law and enforcement and is has less confidence in police officers than do Whites and other racial minorities.
