Lauryn Hill Role Model

Lauryn Hill is not only a natural born performer but as well as a role model. Throughout her life, starting from a young age she has been influencing the music industry ranging from a multitude of genres. Lauryn Hill was born of May 26, 1975 in South Orange, New Jersey to two loving parents, Mal and Valerie Hill. Lauryn was never wealthy but lived comfortably. Hill says “ I was not raised rich, but I never really wanted the things we didn't have. I think my parents instilled in us that we didn't need lavish things as long as we had love and protection, we were always taken care of.” Hill saw sides of both worlds, her neighborhood was located on the borderline of the suburbs and the ghetto. Her teacher repeatedly would tell Mr and Mrs Hill how he couldn't believe how musical Lauryn was. At a very young age Lauryn discovered her love for old soul music. The day little Lauryn found her mothers old records was the start of a journey. The records included classic hits from artists like Marvin Gaye, Tami Terrell, Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathway, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Hill had her mothers sixties soul running through her veins. By the age of 8 she was an expert on old soul music. She started out by singing in front of the mirror and then graduated to the karaoke machine at Six Flags. Her first ever singing break was when she was about 12 or 13, during amateur night at “Showtime at the Apollo.” Soon after Lauryn joined a band with two of her friends Pras and Marcy, they called themselves “Tranzlator Crew.” One of the bigger projects they worked on was a rap in which they rhymed in different languages. After Marcy left to go to college Pras’s cousin Wyclef Jean joined the band in her place, this was the start of the famous trio the Fugees.
