The novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote details the investigation of the seemingly motiveless murders of a small farming town family, the Clutters. In the book, the tone of the writing creates a feeling of emotionless fatalism, emphasizing overall the unfairness of life, as can be seen throughout the novel, especially after the murder of the Clutter family. A fatalistic tone is expressed mainly in the dialogue of the murderous characters Dick and Perry. The unfairness of life is shown through the conflicting suffering of the Clutter family and the suffering in the lives Dick and Perry. It is expressed throughout the narrative, mainly during the middle and later parts of the book, that characters are powerless to do anything other than live…

Every year at Laurel Christian School, we are given a Summer Reading Assignment. The summer assignment consist of several rules, such as reading an assigned book given by your instructor, and keeping a journal of your reading in a standard size spiral bound notebook. In this case the notebook plays a very important role. For each chapter summary, you are required to title the page, give a plot summary, and write a personal analysis of the chapter. It may sound boring or lame but it is very helpful in several ways, simply because over the summer, students are too busy traveling, sleeping late, and having great time and afterwards forgetting everything about education.…
1.The points where I started to noticed foreshshadowing of the ending, was in section 3 where Emily goes to drug store to buy arsenic. There was no information on how Emily was going to use that poison. The story did prepare me for something different then I was expecting. I would of thought Emily would of used the poison on herself, to end her life after she had lost her father. She used it on Homer 2.…
Her stories relate to her life and also provide things that she desired to have done. The reason that May wrote about creating a creature and bringing it back to life is her need of bringing back the people who she loved that died, her children, husband and siblings. The novel contains true events from her life and most of the background she uses are from places she had visited along with her husband. It is said that she would have not written this famous novel if it wasn’t for her interest in scientific discoveries and…

The short story “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” is one major journey, not physically, but mentally for the characters. Though the story ends in tragedy, most of the characters go through major mental changes before their untimely deaths. Most of these changes were good changes, though some of them were negative such as Oakhurst becoming weak and Piney turning her back on her religion. However Piney becoming stronger and Oakhurst showing the extent of his compassion were major changes that proved to be positive for the characters. Though even some of the positive changes had negative consequences, such as Mother Shipton starving herself for her compassion of Piney, and Oakhurst making it impossible to survive by ensuring Tom made it to the…

Familial archetypes prevail as one of Carl Jung’s most commonly known achievements. In the book, “Shades of Gray”, many characters represent some of of Jung’s familial archetypes as they overcome the struggles that the civil war has brought upon them. The archetypes portrayed in this story are Uncle Jed as the father figure, Aunt Ella as the mother figure, and Will himself as the child.…

This decision displays Mays odd and exclusive personality- even one of the common people in their town contributes to this claim when he describes it as “‘the darndest house you ever saw.’” (Kidd 64). In addition to these observations of May, it also proves that she has a childish personality. She makes a highway of marshmallows for roaches, selects the colour of the house to be pink, and in chapter nine, she and Rosaleen play with the water sprinkler squealing and laughing as if they were as -Lily describes it- at school recess.…
