Lady Macbeth confidently assures him “A little water clears us of this deed. How easy is it, then” (II.II.80-81). Although lady Macbeth seemed confident and clever, these qualities did not last long as her guilt started to catch up to her. In Act 5, Lady Macbeth begins sleepwalk and reveal her thoughts out loud. In her sleep, Lady Macbeth replays her role in each of the murders she assisted in with Macbeth. As we recall, Lady Macbeth informed Macbeth that a little water washed the blood right off their hands, and now, Lady Macbeth does not feel the same, “Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, Oh, Oh!” (V.I.43-45) She feels guilty for all the crimes she helped commit and is now unable to let go. She keeps rubbing her hands together as if to remove the blood off of them. After hearing news that Lady Macbeth had died, Macbeth says, “There would have been a time for such a word” (V.V.20). Macbeth seems unbothered by his wife’s death because he has no time for this at the moment. His mind is occupied with all that is happening around him. Macbeth begins to reflects on what life really is, “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time” (V.V.21-23), and that each day is just a day closer to our death. Macbeth’s point of view is that he feels his life is meaningless and that he is just like another actor that is just here to say his part and leave, “Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing” (V.V.26-30). Macbeth’s soliloquy also reveals to the audience that all the things he did held no meaning and there was no point to any of it. This is important because this is the time that audience is able to see how Macbeth feels about all of things he has done. His life was filled with so many events and drama but at the end, they did not effect him the
