Lack Of Irresponsibility In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls

In literature characters often demonstrate a lack of responsibility. Multiple instances take place in The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. In this book Jeannette’s father, Rex Walls, demonstrates a lack of responsibility. This is especially proven with Rex’s alcoholism. One example of this is when he got into a drunken argument with his wife, Jeannette’s mom. After an absurd amount of cussing in front of the children, her mother reached her foot over from the passenger seat and slammed the break and ran out of the car. The irresponsible father continued to drive off-road putting the safety of everyone in and around the car in extreme danger. If he had a job he could provide the basic necessities for his family. His alcoholism took away from family time which began to drive the family apart. Due to Jeannette’s fathers drunken behaviors she was often made fun of in school for having the town drunk as her dad. If they had money the kids wouldn’t have been made fun of for their small ugly house and never eating lunch. Perhaps if he had taken better care of his children they wouldn’t have left so young. Maureen might have never started doing drugs and been a successful person. His irresponsibility led to being homeless with his wife. Ultimately, he led himself to his own grave. While Rex’s lack of responsibility led to many horrible things, it also paved the path for a few wonderful things such as Jeannette becoming a highly respected journalist and author with a husband. It led to Brian becoming a highly decorated police officer with a wife and child. In the end, it was the way him and his wife wanted to live. It led his kids down the right path for themselves.
