Another long-term effect of foster care is the mental health problems that come from the instability and the treatment within the system itself. The abusive system has damaged the mental heath of the children is numerous ways. After long term life in the foster care there has been a reported higher rates of troublesome behavior. The troubling behavior can be described as results that were high on the Child Behavior Check List- a valid resource used to quantify problems that occur with children. Most of this information came about after studying the child placement. It was higher with the children who changed homes quite frequently (Newton et al. 5). The other problem that is studied is the mental health of the children in foster care. More than half the children who entered foster care required mental health services for both what they undergo in the unstable foster care and the conditions that the children undergo before they came into the foster care system. Anyone who was a victim of sexual or physical abuse received mental health services regardless of their current condition. Children who undergo any kind of foster care are three times as likely to be receiving psychiatric aid for their past experiences. (Garland et al. 2).
