Why Do We Change For Something We Like: Kino V.S. Greg

Have you ever acted in a way different from the original way you act because of an event or a situation that has taken place? At the novel, The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck and the fictional short story, “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, this is exactly what occurs. The Pearl is about a guy named Kino finds a pal to help his son cure a scorpion sting, but changes his characteristics in a not so good way… However a racist man tries to get the pearl but ends up only to find his son’s head shot away. “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” is the story of Greg, who needs to study for math but wants to play basketball. He runs away to find an abandoned house that lives Lemon Brown. Thugs try to steal Lemon Brown’s treasure and Greg learns a lesson when he was shown the treasure. Kino and Greg both begin their stories with a sense of what is important in life

One quote that shows his satisfaction with his life is, “There is not need for speech if it is only a habit anyway. Kino sighed with satisfaction, and that was conversation.” (Steinbeck 4). Kino and his wife, Juana, are both content with their lives and don’t need to speak. Furthermore, Kino and his wife are content, and enjoy the things they are able to have.In the later pages of the novel, “ ‘This pearl has become my soul,’ said Kino. ‘If I give it up I shall lose my soul’ ” (Steinbeck 67). This shows that Kino seems to care more about this pearl than his family. In addition, Kino believes that the pearl is filled with good things such as riches.
