4,000 years ago, King Hammurabi wrote a set of 282 laws to make his civilizations fair. But were they just? In my opinion, Hammurabi’s Code was fair because it protected family, it took care of people’s property, and it helped people with personal injury. First of all, Hammurabi’s Code protected the family. For example, in Document C, Law 195 says if a son struck his father, his hands shall be cut off. Also, in Document C, Law 148 says that if a wife gets sick, the husband will take care of the wife as long as she lives. Based on what I read, Hammurabi wanted for children to behave and respect their parents. This shows that Hammurabi wanted to protect the weak, in this case, the wife. As you can see, Hammurabi protected families by taking care of the weak, parents and children. …show more content…
For instance, in Document D, Law 21 says that if a man has broken through the wall of a house to rob it, he has to hang in the hole he has made until he dies. Also, in Document D, Law 23 says that if the robber is not caught, the victim will get the whole territory to pay for the lost items. According to Law 21, Hammurabi wanted fair punishments for all. This is important because Hammurabi took care of people’s property by getting the whole community to help restore items.
Accordingly, Hammurabi’s Code helped people with personal injury. For example, in Document E, Law 196 says if a man has knocked out a free man’s eyeball, his eye shall be knocked out as well. In addition, in Document E, Law 209 says if a free man’s pregnant daughter gets struck and loses the baby, the man who struck the pregnant daughter will have to pay 10 shekels of silver. This shows that Hammurabi wanted to protect people’s injuries. Based on what I read, Hammurabi wanted to protect pregnant daughters. Overall, Hammurabi helped people with personal injury by protecting

No. So, if a father is not going to go to court demanding his son’s hands be cut off, then the father is actually the one protecting the son, not Hammurabi. I think the majority of Hammurabi’s laws were just, and I have reasons to believe this. I will split this essay into a few different parts: Family Law, Personal Injury Law, and Property Law. For example, document E, law 199 it states that if a man has knocked out the eye of a slave he shall repay the slave owner half of his value. This is just because if you were the slaves owner and someone knocked out your slaves eye, you’d want some sort of compensation for the fact that you might have lost a able-bodied worker. Also, document E, law 196 it states that if a man has knocked out the eye of a free man, his eye shall be knocked out as well. This is just because it’s fair, it’s an eye for an eye. As you can see from the evidence that Hammurabi’s code is just because of the property laws.…
