After persistent begging one day, Mariam’s father promises to take her to one of his theaters to see Pinocchio. Mariam waits expectantly that day, but he never arrives to take her. Mariam decides to leave her property for the first time in her life. Nana begs Mariam not to leave say that Nana will die is she does. Mariam doesn’t listen and walks to her father’s house. When she rings the doorbell, a maid answers the door and says that her father is not home. Hurt, Mariam asks to go inside, but the maid says she has specific instructions not to let her in. Jalil’s driver comes out and offers to take Mariam home or to a hotel so she can be comfortable. Mariam refuses and sleeps outside Jalil’s house. The next day, Jalil’s driver insists that she must go home. As they walk to the car, Mariam catches a glimpse of her father in a window. The driver is very kind to Mariam and when they arrive at Mariam’s house, they see that Nana has hanged herself on a tree.
