The world itself is ever changing. Two authors by the names of Pamela Paul and Michael Pollan would agree upon this statement and would add that not only is it changing but it’s direction is one that would cause much harm. Pamela Paul writes an exceptional essay, Green if Not Clean where she discuss that the cleaning supplies that we use to maintain our homes clean can overtime be not only harmful to the environment but to our own health. As for Michael Pollan discuss in more depth in his essay Why Bother that in order for things to change in our lives, we must take action. Both authors use their own ideas that triggers an array of emotions towards their audience.…
Today’s society in the United States is a technological paradise where answers can be found in the blink of an eye on a smart phone and trips across the world can be made in a matter of hours. Innovations and constant breakthroughs have made people smarter and more efficient but, consequently, have also made the nation, as a whole, distracted. With on-going industrialization, the environment has taken an abrupt turn for the worst. The solution for the past few decades has been to “go green.” Words like “recycle” and “solar energy” have become focal points for many people, and the question for our society has become, “How can we fix this problem that has been created?”…
There are endless problems with the environment and the big scheme of things is very overwhelming to those who want to solve the issues, in turn, nothing is done to solve the problems. “The Environmental crisis: The Devil is in the Generalities” by Ross McKitrick explains how the result of the generalization of the word environment causes people to believe the world is always in an environmental crisis. McKitrick’s essay is effective in displaying the overall effects of generalizing the word environment. His two main concerns and insightful views on who to blame for such environmental crisis’ make his argument valid and compelling. The overall idea of being “pro-environmentalist” is great and McKitrick touches on how people do want…
During my time in high school, I have realized what I am truly passionate about. When I’m not at school or working at Chick-fil-A, my time is almost entirely devoted to band. I am also always looking for ways to create a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly space. Environmental awareness and music make me the happiest in my life. I’ve spent roughly 1,300 hours taking part in my high school marching band program.…
Environmental historian and professor, Ted Steinberg wrote the book Down To Earth which presents American history through the lens of nature. Steinberg does an excellent job displaying the significant role nature has played throughout American history and his writing will forever change the way you perceive our country’s history. This book differs from your traditional American History books by uniquely linking historical events to their environmental counterparts. Down To Earth provides an insightful perspective on American History by highlighting the environmental impacts caused by our culture and making us question whether or not development truly meant progress.…
When it comes to Global warming, being a vegetarian should be turned to as a first resort rather than going more toward the Prius, a car that has been made to cut vehicle emissions in half in an attempt to fight against global warming. Kathy Freston’s article “Vegetarian is the new Prius” caught my eye immediately when choosing an essay for the very fact that, I want Toyota Prius, and also because I’ve tried going vegetarian. Although I see nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, the lifestyle just didn’t work for me. I do to a certain extent agree with her argument because ever since I took ecology in high school, the environment has been very important to me, and I do what I can to help preserve it. Freston wrote that President Herbert Hoover promised a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage”.…
Silent Spring Rough Draft The Earth provides us with life and sustainability, and without keeping the environment clean, this structure could collapse. Humans pollute the air with car use and factory production, trash the land with garbage and uneaten food, spray harmful chemicals onto plants, and poison waters with trash and substances such as oil. In order to be able to be healthy, it is important to keep our environment clean and healthy for ourselves and the wildlife living in it.…
Underground, dark, warm, and damp is the work environment of a coal miner. Coal mining has been around since the 1300’s. Since then, technology has changed and is still booming in today’s society. It was approximately around the late 1800’s that coal became a significant resource in generating electricity. The differences in coal mining today and back then were tremendously different.…
I have had a lifelong passion for environmental issues that arose from a childhood spent amongst mountains, canyons, islands, and rivers. The Anacostia River near my home is dubbed “The Forgotten River,” for it has been transformed by neglect. It was integral to my childhood—my family canoed on the river, my crew team practiced on it, and my Eagle Scout project involved rehabilitating one of its wetlands. The river showed me that environmental issues are complex, involving science, social justice, politics, economics, and history. From a young age, I was stunned by my city’s apathy and saw a change that needed to occur.…
The connection between humans and the land has undeniably been a source of vitality and community for centuries. In recent history, many people are becoming more and more alarmed by the disappearance of this natural land they grew up on, and therefore the memories connected with this land. In Tamale Traditions, by Amy Coplen, the author utilizes anecdotes and careful word choice to manipulate the reader’s emotions toward understanding this invaluable connection. Her goal in provoking strong emotions in the reader is to make them more receptive of her message of environmental conservation. Throughout this passage, the writer consistently, and persuasive, builds up her argument through making the blanket statement that all humans are connected to nature.…
The Cuyahoga River fire of 1969. The Love Canal catastrophe in 1977. The Bhopal, India disaster of 1984. These incidents were defining moments in my youth that ultimately influenced my choice of careers. However, if I had to point to a single, seminal moment that most affected my desire for environmental conservation and restoration, it was the early 1970s public service announcement (“Keep America Beautiful”), which featured a Native American chief shedding a tear as trash is thrown out of a moving car and lands at his feet.…
With the advancement of modern medicine following the second world war came an exponential increase in the world’s population. With this staggering growth came an accelerated use of resources, which are not being replaced. This has led to the rise of environmentalism, a movement based on using less, in an effort to better protect the earth. James Hamblin, a senior editor and journalist for the Atlantic, is a proponent of this movement. In his article, “Living Simply in a Dumpster,” Hamblin highlights the ideas and motives behind Jeff Wilson’s, a college dean and professor, choice to live in a dumpster.…

It is vital that a society knows of its contribution to the environment they live in on a daily basis, and what effect they have on it for future generations to come. Having a commitment to an array of interactions with the environment, engaging in overall environmental awareness, and learning or participating in environmental beliefs, are all forms of eco-activism. Eco-activism can also be seen as ecological consciousness, meaning that theories such as Dr. Rob Nixon’s “Slow Violence”, serves as a guide to environmentalism. This theory explains that all environmental atrocities “occur steadily and out of sight.” ( Okuyade,x).…
