Keeping Germs At Bay Case Study

Decent Essays
This was hard for me to choose because all of these are important but I decided to go with professional office setting, relevant paperwork & questions, and getting comfortable with the healthcare provider. Thinking about this from the patient's perspective and having an experience recently with transferring to a new doctor I feel the patient will think about these three items before any of the others.
First impressions say much to a prospective patient, and working in a clean environment is essential for medical staff. Clean waiting rooms, exam rooms, front desks, and bathrooms are important. Keeping germs at bay is prudent. In the medical office, a simple surface cleaning and pickup just is not enough. Second, relevant paperwork is important

The office had three dentists, and every dentist had 3 rooms for themselves and 8 hygienists in the office. Throughout my observation hours here I noticed the office had very good infections control protocols. Everything was covered during each cleaning and tear down and wiped down after every cleaning. The only thing I noticed was they had already opened their instruments and had them laying…

Although medical and nursing staff employ the use of standard and additional precautions the single most important thing that staff can do whilst working is perform effective hand washing to reduce the risks of cross contamination. Everyone has some form of resident flora on their body, this helps the host to stay healthy but when this resident flora is transferred by contact to another person this may cause the person to become ill. In addition to this resident flora a person picks up infectious particles through contact with other people or environmental surroundings (Koutoukidis et al, 2013, p 361). The most effective way an enrolled nurse or other health care workers can decrease the risk of transmission of these infectious organisms is…

During my clinical rotation at Palmetto Richland on the Acute Care for the Elderly unit there were several patients on contact precautions due primarily to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or high counts of gram-positive Escherichia coli bacterium (E. coli) in the urine and blood. A good example of best practice that I witnessed was the proper display and implementation of contact precautions around patients with multidrug-resistant organisms and bacteria (MDROs). If a patient is placed on contact precautions on this ACE unit floor, a large blue hanging bag, called an isolation precaution bag, is hung outside their room containing gloves and gowns. The nurse is to put on the glove and gown before entering the room and making contact with the patient.…

Katelyn Baker 09-27-2014 Monday-Thursday 7:30-9:30 MRSA: Lori Popp’s Story I had the chance to listen to guest speaker Lori Popp talk about what happened to her after going through a bariatric operation and the complications that came with it. Her story really opened my eyes to what is happening in the world and health care settings. She taught me to be cautious because not every health care worker takes the proper precautions when working with their patients. This is how she acquired MRSA, because her surgeon did not follow proper protocol. Lori endured multiple antibiotic treatments, but more than anything she had to endure a terribly great number of surgeries; currently somewhere near 60 surgeries, to help control her MRSA infection because…

She then used paper towels to pat her hands down and then used them to mop up the remaining water around the sink. The senior dental hygiene student then returned to her cubicle and put on her Personal Protective Equipment which included her isolation gown, bonnet, facemask, and safety glasses. She again returned to the sink to rewash her hands and then put on her rubber cleaning gloves. Afterwards, she started by cleaning out her suction lines for about two minutes, and then she checked her water bottle determining she had enough for at least one patient. The senior dental hygiene student wiped down all the metal surfaces using a DisCide wipe and any equipment in her tackle box that she would be using on her patient such as the blood pressure cuff, thermometer, clipboard, and ink pen.…

    b) Even though Australia is well immunised, infection outbreaks can still spread if there are many unvaccinated people in the same place for a long time. When a high number of people in the public are immunised, it becomes harder for diseases to spread and this process is called herd immunity. When vaccine protection is not guaranteed, more people need to be immunized to attain herd immunity and prevent outbreaks. Australia focuses on attaining high vaccine uptake within small local areas as opposed to concentrating on a national average as it is more effective in influencing herd immunity. Children that are not vaccinated in Australia due to large family sizes, allergies and not using childcare, pose a threat to achieving herd immunity.…

The review of the patient records and what is potentially a unique trait for his or her culture while examining the background information on the patient (Bickley, 2017). Introduction: Over the course of about a week, I ran and studied a lab that represents the ecology of life with bacteria. To test how the ecology of life works, we measured and reviewed the growth of bacteria after washing one’s hands at different intervals of time. After washing our hands four times in 30 second intervals, we wiped a finger on a different segment of an Agar plate where our bacteria would have a strong environment to grow and develop.…

I feel that this is an experience that every student in healthcare should go through. One of the most important observations that I made concerns the various procedures of preventing infections in the operating room. The prevention majorly focuses on the patient, especially when considered the patient has open sounds during the operating process. At times, the practitioners tend to forget the importance of cleaning their hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based cleaners when interacting with the environment (Scott, Earl, Leaper, Massey, Mewburn, Williams, 1999). Notably, the assumption that the practitioner does not need to clean hands simply because they have gloves is misplaced, and it is often overlooked (Weber, Anderson, &Rutala, 2013; Karki& Cheng, 201)).…
