How to be the Next Katniss Everdeen The arrow whistles as it soars through the air and lands with a smack as it hits the dead middle of the target. People use archery in different ways. Archery can be used to go bow hunting, it is a sport played, or you can shoot archery as a leisure activity when you’re bored. The enjoyment derived from your archery experience is partly dependent on how well you are able to shoot. Accuracy is key while shooting archery. By following my directions, I guarantee you will learn how to shoot an arrow more accurately, and who knows maybe you will even become the next Robin Hood or Katniss Everdeen. Shooting a bullseye sounds easy right? How hard can pulling back a string and shooting an arrow really be? Many people underestimate the complexity of archery. What looks like just shooting an arrow actually involves many individual steps, where technique is crucial. The first step for shooting an accurate arrow is your stance and posture. If you are right handed you should stand with your left side facing the target so that your body creates a right angle with your target. You should be standing up straight with your shoulders facing the target and your feet shoulder width apart. Relaxing your body is important while shooting, because if your body is not relaxed your shot will be rigid; therefore it will not be as accurate. Once you have figured out the proper stance, the next step is to nock (attach) the arrow. There is a nocking point on the string and you should nock the arrow below that point. Listen for a “snap” as the arrow attaches to the string. When attaching the arrow the odd color feather should always be facing outwards. The next step is to place your fingers in a way that you “hook” the string with your pointer finger above the nock point, and your middle and ring finger below. Your other hand should grip the bow handle with your thumb facing towards the target. Grip the bow loosely to ensure that your body stays relaxed instead of going ridged. These two steps are the most crucial for shooting an accurate shot. The way you release can make or break your whole shot. When you release your shot it must be smooth without a jerk or a flinch. In order to create a smooth release, relax all of your fingers and let the bowstring do the rest by ripping the arrow away. The final step for shooting an accurate shot is your follow-through. This is the most overlooked yet most important step of the whole process. Keep aiming after you release until the arrow actually strikes the target. If you continue the aim, your accuracy will be superior. Being accurate is the key to success while shooting a bow and arrow. If you are accurate you will be able to hit the bullseye, or whatever animal you are hunting. However, shooting an arrow accurately is not as easy as it sounds.
