While reading MacLeod’s “Ain’t No Making It,” I was able to make connections to Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed, even though Ehrenriech and MacLeod conducted their research in different ways. In “Ain’t No Getting By,” MacLeod works at a camp program in a low income neighborhood housing project, where he studies two groups of boys, the Brothers and Hallway Hangers through interviews with them mainly about their aspirations or expectations for the future. While reading MacLeod’s study, I wondered how motivation and aspirations might have tied into the low-wage work that Barbara Ehrenreich encountered in Nickel and Dimed. I wondered this because I feel that many of those workers felt stuck in their situations.…

In Randol Contreras’ book, “The Stickup Kids” he does an ethnographic study of what is known as the Crack Era in the South Bronx. Contreras studies how society shaped people growing up in the South Bronx that led them into the world of drugs and crime in order to fulfill the American Dream. He does so by providing detailed field notes, creating a sociological framework of how components such as culture, deviance, socialization, crime and race contribute to the society as a whole. In this book, Contreras specifically studies a small community of friends in his neighborhood and how their life changes along with the loss of jobs and deindustrialization of the economy. Contreras starts off by describing how his friends started to become “stickup”…
What I do not believe that a person demonstrated criminal behavior in the past can't change permanently. The reason to that is that people get in and out of trouble every single day. One of them is that in the book "The Outsiders" Dally the man the went to jail when he was a young boy never change when he got older. When he got older he did worse things like robbing stores and cars even. The big reason is that when people go into jail and come back to the outside world they still do huge criminal crimes that everyone will know about.…
“They grew up on the outside of society. They weren’t looking for a fight. They were looking to belong.” Who you ask? The greasers and the Socs in the book, “The Outsiders” written by S.E. Hinton.…
How can one simply alter another's life? There is a novel called The Outsiders, and was written by S.E. Hinton, to partly show that anyone can write an intriguing book. In the book, the main protagonist is called Ponyboy, who is a “greaser” as stated in chapter one, “but I am a greaser” (Hinton 1). Some of the choices made by Dally, Darry, and Soda affect Pony’s life, how he sees himself, and relationships with his brothers.…
Crowd or Mob, Group or Outsider A crowd can easily turn into a mob because of uncertainty and or anger. Support for this statement is shown in the book “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton, a story about a boy in a lower social class who gets involved in a killing which leads to the death of some of his friends and a social class fight. It is also supported by the play “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” by Rod Serling which is a story about a town in which weird events happen and chaos takes over. Also in the story “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton it shows how you can be part of a group and still feel alone if the group does not share the same ideas as the individual.…
The social class statuses of the “Saints and the Roughnecks” gangs shaped their opportunities and response from the community in several ways. Many of the differences between the two groups were the result of their financial status but other differences such as their visibility and demeanor had an impact as well. While both groups were not that much different from each other, they were treated differently by the community. The Saints and Roughnecks is a story based on research that was completed by Mr. William J. Chambliss whose area of research is criminology and sociology of the law. Chambliss establishes rapport with two groups or gangs of boys, assigns names and follows them around gathering information regarding their behavior and it’s…
In the book The Outsiders there is a lot of gang violence including street fights, robberies, and ganging up on one of the the opposing gang members. S.E. Hinton describes the Socs as the wealthier people that live in the better parts of town and the Greasers as the poor trashy part of town. Even though the Socs and Greasers aren’t that different, they still have war with each other for no apparent reason. Some people don't understand that Socs don’t act as the ideal Socs are, and some Greasers don’t act as the ideal Greaser. What sparked the big fight was when Johnny was defending himself and stabbed a Soc so Ponyboy didn’t get drowned by a few of them.…
Characteristics of Juvenile Probation & Requirements Most Common Types of Probation Requirements Along with juvenile probation comes juvenile probation requirements. In 2009, 59 percent of juveniles were deemed delinquent by a court of law, and out of that, 60 percent were sanctioned with a probationary sentence (NeMoyer et al., 2014). When placed on probation, juveniles face a plethora of stringent obligations, which includes, but not limited to, probation officer check-ins, adherence to curfews, therapy sessions, making amends to any victims of the offense, volunteer work/community service, random illegal drug testing, etc., etc. (2014).…

The focus on juvenile delinquency looks to figure out the reasons why juveniles are motivated to deviate from the socially acceptable norms. Analysis of why juveniles commit delinquent acts is best addressed by utilizing the theories in Criminology that are commonly associated with juveniles. These theories are Labeling Theory, Social Learning Theory, Social Control Theory, and Differential Association Theory, and all are relevant to how juveniles are socialized to interact with society. In the midst of the youthful years, youngsters' duties and requests get to be more prominent, which is a crucial piece of their way to youthful adulthood. Nonetheless, not every youngster change well to the new requests and duties of immaturity, which brings about them reacting in ways that are unfortunate.
