The causes of this punishment are; fear of increased violence in incarcerated adolescents (pg.159), differentiation of social class (pg.155), and racial discrimination (pg.154). This sentence can cause the adolescents who receive it to lose their rights as an American citizen, as outlined in the Declaration of Independence. A social policy that would help the circumstances of this punishment would be for the United States bans juvenile life imprisonment without parole sentences for all crimes committed when under the age of 18. This policy is more liberal for the reason that it involves the government cutting into the situation and banning a certain political appeal. This social policy would help many adolescents that were sentenced to these cruel and unusual punishments and would allow them to regain freedom by standing for a parole board to regain limited freedom when they were 18-21 years old.
