I believe that Jordans primarily thrive off of media hype toward the brand. The company, for years, has been able to charge ridiculous prices because they limit the inventory. Limiting the availability of an average shoe manipulates the consumer to this twisted idea that Jordan brand is distinguished amongst the horde of sneaker companies. The brand recognition around the greatest player to every play is an enormous selling point as well. Phil Knight, the co-owner of Nike, was a genius to sell the world on this idea that inside each sneaker box is not only the shoes but the chance to “be like Mike.” Sneaker collectors fiend over retro jewels that remind them of watching Mike in their living rooms, and then rushing to the driveway to practice his signature moves during the commercial breaks. These are the iconic shoes Jordan wore for his first 14 years in his historic career (including his last championship). Since 1999, the year after the Jordan 14 was conceived, no new model has become a memorable shoe. Jordan was known for the retro, bulky style of the 80’s and 90’s so the streamlined, slim style of today is a polar opposite. With sneaker technology expanding, the brand has yet to create a new design that modern consumers love so Jumpman is forced to revert back to releasing 1 through 14s to stay competitive with other companies. With the introduction of the highly successful Adidas Yeezy models and new designs by Under Armour, Jordans are struggling to remain a contender. I believe in 20 years Jordan rereleases will be so played out that the company will become irrelevant. Nothing quite resembles exactly what Michael Jordan has done in our country. From securing his rightful place as the world’s greatest basketball player to becoming the sneaker juggernaut alongside Nike. Next time you consider buying shoes, remember the factors involved, both positive and negative.
