Girls have it plastered on their face and boys tend to bathe in it to attract the ladies. In the cosmetic industry, there is a vast array of companies to choose from that will give the consumers what they want. A cosmetic is defined by Oxford Dictionary as, “a product applied to the body, especially the face, to improve its appearance” (“Cosmetic”). This means that cosmetics can include makeup, sunscreen, perfumes, colognes, and facial washes. At one point, all of those products were tested on animals. However, animal testing has been around for so long, that we should have enough chemicals tested. Why continue testing chemicals over and over again when the results are the same? At the same time, companies continue inventing newer and better products that require a new set of chemicals to be tested. However, animal testing may not seem as beneficial as one would think. According to Henry Mone, “Reliance on animal testing… has actually hindered the evaluation of many chemicals and ingredients inside and outside the cosmetics industry.” Due to the amount of time and money animal testing takes, it is almost not worth it (20). With animal testing for drugs, scientists run into many issues. There is the fact that animals, especially rats and dogs are biologically different than humans. It was calculated in a study that, “animal tests and human results are the same only 5% to 25% of the time. Eighty-eight percent of doctors agreed that animal experiments can be misleading ‘because of anatomical and physiological differences between animals and humans.’” Although many drugs passed animal testing, once given to humans, serious illnesses and birth defects started to arise (Stachura 148). For the amount of money that is put into animal testing, that is a very low percentage. There are some cases where certain drugs were deemed unsafe in animals, but benefitted humans when consumed.
