In “A&P” by John Updike, Sammy quitting his job was an act of rebellion against what society expects of him. It had all started like a normal day at the store; a young man was following all rules until a group of girls walked in only wearing bathing suits. No one could help but stare at them; it was unusual to see girls wearing a bathing suit at the store. Legal, the manager, scolded the girls for he did not accept how they were dressed. Sammy not being able to keep working by the “policies” he announced he quit as he took off his apron and bow tie that constricted him. Sammy thought “That's policy for you.
