John Tyler's was born into a wealthy family with 7 other children. Tyler studied law at the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1807, and being admitted to the bar in 1809.
After his admittance, Tyler worked in a prominent law firm in Richmond, Virginia. His father became Governor of Virginia in 1810, and used his connections to get John a position in the Virginia House of Delegates. After his father's death, Tyler inherited many slaves, and lots of property.

During the War of 1812, Tyler was a Captain. After the war was over, Tyler was elected to the House of Representatives, and served from 1816-1821. From 1825 to 1827, Tyler served as Governor of Virginia, just like his father many years ago. For many years Tyler was a prominent southern advocate, and with many other like-minded people, joined the new Whig party.

William Harrison had fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe in The War of 1812, and gained the nick-name Tippecanoe. Thus their campaign's slogan was “Tippecanoe and Tyler too.”. Their campaign proved successful, and Tyler was Vice President in 1841.

President Harrison gave a two and a half hour inauguration speech in the cold, without wearing a coat or hat, and caught pneumonia. He died only a month later, leaving Tyler as President. Tyler was the first Vice President to become president after the president died, so people were unsure whether he should have the full powers and responsibilities of the president, or just the title. Tyler maintained that he was the president, and that he was entitled to all of the office's benefits. His critics gave him the nick-name “His Accidency”.

Tyler vetoed two Whig-supported bills, which the Whigs responded to by attempting to impeach Tyler for misuse of veto power, but they failed to get him removed. Tyler also annexed Texas as a slave state, something that angered many
