TRAGIC HERO PROJECT
A Tragic Hero is somebody who everyone loves and grows a connection with, especially the reader and/or viewer. They tend to seem like everyone else so the reader and/or viewer could identify with them easily, and the Tragic Hero tends to be a character who makes an error in judgement or has a flaw that combined with fate and external forces brings on a tragedy or destruction. Because of his character flaw and struggle of what to do right, John Proctor is considered a Tragic Hero. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller has a strong storyline of the Salem Witch Hunt in Massachusetts. John Proctor (one of the main characters) is considered a friendly man who everyone knows. Then, as though to cry out is his only means of speech left: She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now.” (pg. …show more content…
The book states:
“ELIZABETH I am not your judge, I cannot be. As though giving him release: Do as you will, do as you will!
PROCTOR: Would you give them such a lie? Say it. Would you ever give them this? She cannot answer. You would not; if tongs of fire were singeing you you would not! It is evil. Good, then - it is evil, and I do it!” (pg. 128)
This quote tells us that Proctor was going to give the courts a false confession, but he wanted to save his life. But in the midst of this mass hysteria, Proctor realizes he’s making a huge mistake and he decided to not go on with the lie, because he knew what was right. Another quote from the book states:
“DANFORTH: Is that document a lie? If it is a lie I will not accept it! What say you? I will not deal in lies, Mister! Proctor is motionless. You will give your honest confession in my hand, or I cannot keep you from the rope. Proctor does not reply. Which way do you go Mister?
His breast heaving, his eyes starving, Proctor tears the paper and crumples it, and he is weeping in fury, but erect.
DANFORTH: Marshal!
PARRIS, hysterically, as though the tearing paper were his life: Proctor, Proctor!
HALE: Man, you will hang! You
