The owner of the pharmacy, when questioned by law enforcement, named Gacy as the contractor the teenager had most likely left the store to talk with. When Gacy was questioned by police, he profusely denied talking to the boy. Police, however, were convinced Gacy was behind the boy’s disappearance. After checking Gacy’s criminal history, they discovered that he had served a prison sentence for sodomy involving two teens and was charged with a sexually driven aggravated assault involving two other teens. Having recieved with a search warrant, on December 13, investigators found several suspicious items: a 1975 high school class ring, other people's driver's licenses, handcuffs, a syringe, clothing too small for Gacy, and a photo receipt from the pharmacy where the teenager had worked. Law enforcement assigned two surveillance teams to follow Gacy, while they continued their investigation. Further digging into Gacy's background linked him to the disappearance of three additional young people. On December 18, the Pharmacy photo receipt found in Gacy's home was traced to a friend of the missing teenager, who said she had placed it in his pocket just before he left the store. This evidence indicated that the missing teen had been inside
