Innovations, technologies, patents, and investments into research and development are an initiative where John Deere and Co. excels. John Deere is a leader in technological advancements. The company has “spent hundreds of millions of dollars on technologies that use detailed data on soil type, seed variety, and weather to help farmers cut costs and increase yields,” write Faulkner & Cebul (2014). These technologies are the future of agriculture.
John Deere has focused on innovations, technologies, and patents and has invested heavily into research and development for numerous reasons. With an expected nine billion people to feed worldwide by the year 2050, agriculture will continue to be a critical market. It is imperative that food production increases upwards of 60% by 2050 to meet human consumption needs (Gruley & Sing, 2012). John Deere is a progressive leader in achieving this objective through advanced technologies that can increase the yield of crops and maintain soil moisture and fertility (Gruley & Sing, 2012). Several technologies have been released, including the John Deere FarmSight Program.

John Deere and Co. focuses on a differentiation strategy, rather than cost leadership. John Deere uses the ability to make customized, dependable products with the most advanced technology in order to differentiate themselves in the market and give them an advantage over their competitors. John Deere machinery retains its monetary value longer and the core values of the company are “integrity; innovation; commitment and quality that has evolved into a global corporation” (Taylor, 2014). Although the higher price may deter people from purchasing a John Deere implement, the higher quality, better service, and new patented technologies make it worthwhile for many buyers.
