Jelly Roll Morton grew up in New Orleans and started playing piano at the age of 10. In 1904 he began traveling, playing the piano in places like Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. He was one of the creators of ragtime, which was the first major black music style popular with the white community. He moved to Chicago in 1918 and in 1920 he started to lead his own band. He integrated his great ability well with the ensemble and was a great leader. Whenever he becomes a janitor, I don’t know many janitors who are big time musicians on the side. Sidney Bichet grew up in a musical family. His four brothers all played an instrument. In 1919 he was discovered by Will Marion Cook, who was the leader of a concert band that was about to travel to Europe and he took Bichet with him. He codified rules of early jazz. Around 1925 Bechet continued to wander, traveling in Europe and the USA. In the 1930s, he began to drop off the map before trying to start a two man group which was short lived and the two started managing a tailor’s shop before Bichet made a big return before going back to Europe and in 1951 he settled in France as a show business
