Jenny Saville is a female contemporary artist. Saville was born in Cambridge, England in 1970. She attended the Glasgow School of Art in 1988 and graduated in 1992. She also attended the University of Cincinnati Ohio and Slade School of Art. During her portfolio show, she was lucky enough to have an art collector see her work. Art collector Charles Saatchi purchased her entire senior show and commissioned her work for the next two years.
Jenny Saville states that while attending the University of Cincinnati, she became interested in obese people, but mainly women. She stated that she liked “Big white flesh in shorts and t-shirts. It was good to see because they had the physicality that I was interested in.” After being done with school Saville began to research her topic of interest. It is part of many portraits painted by Saville. One thing I appreciate about Jenny Saville is that she shows the reality of women’s lives. In this painting she shows a women with many scars and bruises on her face. Many women today suffer from domestic violence and are too afraid to speak up. Meanwhile, others are oblivious to the fact that there are many women who are too weak to fend for themselves. When women are hit and abused they lose who they are and many times feel lost. In this painting Saville shows that yes scars can be seen on the outside but also on the inside. Saville’s painting is successful to show the reality of people’s lives, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. I feel that more people, especially women, should become aware of reality and help those who can’t help
