But as she walked in the park with her dog Ugly, seeing other women with boyfriends and husbands and children, Monica was still without direction. Doady was happily married and so was her brother Bunny; friends and cousins were also getting engaged and marrying. Monica had been to too many weddings, aimless, envying the bride but not quite wanting the groom in question, conscious merely that she lacked something the bride now had: a point to life, or perhaps status. As people in the park passed by without noticing her, Monica promised herself that one day they would know who she was – what for, she could not say. But she had great ambition. Monica later recognized that beneath the shyness and self-consciousness of a very young woman there lurked a confidence that was simply looking for a chance to surface.
