Born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 18th, 1931, Jay Maisel has become one of the most famous photographers of his time. He studied painting and graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale, beginning a career in photography shortly after college in 1954. Maisel worked for forty years shooting pictures for magazine covers, jazz albums, advertising and doing other projects for customers worldwide. Perhaps one of his most well-known pictures is of Miles Davis that was used on the cover of the album Kind of Blue. He stopped working commercially in the late ‘90s, and has begun to focus more on his personal work. Additionally, he holds photography workshops around the country and continues to sell prints. It was taken in Pingyao, China and it shows three men and two women looking out the window of a green, red and yellow bus. The people, unaware that their picture is being taken, are looking away from the camera, wearing faces of fatigue and anguish. Most of them lean on the windows and look as if they just wish they could lie down and take a nap. Your eye is taken throughout the picture due to the many lines, such as the stripes of color on the bus and the windows, which reflect some trees. One interesting thing about the photo is that the stripes of color at the bottom of the bus don’t really line up with the windows, since the windows look a bit diagonal and the lines are perfectly straight. Looking at the photograph, you might also wonder where the people are going, where they’re coming from, and why they look so unhappy, their moods in direct contrast with the brightly colored bus. Because of this unhappy feeling, the theme is probably that everyone has their own personal struggle and you could be surrounded by many people and seem happy, but still be fighting that internal
